Setting up and verifying your email domain

Learn how to set up, verify, and optimize your email domain for successful campaigns on KOMI.

Getting your domain verified is a crucial step in ensuring your emails reach your subscribers’ inboxes and not their spam folders. This guide will walk you through the steps to set up and verify your email domain on KOMI. We’ll also explain why setting up a subdomain is recommended to protect your main domain's reputation.

Step 1: Access the email domain setup

To start setting up your domain in KOMI, navigate to the Settings section in your dashboard and click Audience & Campaigns. Under the Email Domain Setup section, click Add Email Domain.

Step 2: Enter and configure your domain

Next, you’ll need to enter the domain you own and want to use for sending emails. We recommend using a subdomain to protect your primary domain’s reputation (e.g., hello.customdomain.com). Once you’ve entered your domain, click NEXT to proceed to the next step in the verification process.

💡 Tip: If your domain is customdomain.com, create a subdomain by adding a word before your domain, like hello.customdomain.com.

Why set up a subdomain?

Setting up a subdomain (like hello.customdomain.com) is recommended to safeguard your primary domain's reputation. This means that any potential issues with your email campaigns—such as high bounce rates or spam complaints—won’t negatively impact the reputation of your main website domain.

Step 3: Set your sending email and configure DNS records

Once your domain is entered under Add Email Domain, specify the email address you’ll be sending campaigns from. It’s also recommended to add a Sender Name to personalize your emails.

Step 4: Configure your DNS records wherever your DNS is stored

KOMI will generate the DNS records (SPF, DKIM, and DMARC) needed for domain verification. These records need to be added to your domain's DNS settings, typically managed by your host or domain registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Bluehost, Cloudflare). After adding the DNS records to your domain host, return to KOMI and click VERIFY.

💡 Tip: Some hosting providers require truncated versions of the host values (e.g., just hello instead of hello.customdomain.com). If you run into issues, try both full and truncated versions of the host values or contact your hosting provider for assistance.

Step 5: Verify your domain

Once you’ve configured the DNS records with your host, return to the KOMI dashboard. Click DONE to close the setup popup. Then, click VERIFY in KOMI. If everything is set up correctly, you’ll see a confirmation message that your domain is verified and ready for sending emails.

Common troubleshooting steps for email domain verification

Sometimes, even after following the setup steps, your domain might not verify successfully. Here are some common issues we've encountered and how to resolve them:

  1. Incorrect DNS record configuration:
If your domain isn’t verifying, double-check that the DNS records (SPF, DKIM, and DMARC) are correctly entered in your domain host’s settings. Sometimes, small errors like a missing dot or an extra space can cause verification to fail.

  2. Subdomain vs. full domain:
Some hosting providers require that you use a truncated version of your subdomain (e.g., just “hello” instead of “hello.customdomain.com”). If verification fails, try entering the truncated version of your subdomain in your DNS settings.

  3. Access issues:
Ensure that you have the correct login credentials and access to your domain host’s DNS settings. If you’re working with a third party, make sure they have the necessary permissions to make DNS changes on your behalf.

  4. Domain conflicts:
If your domain is associated with another email service or a previous setup, conflicts may arise that prevent verification. Ensure that your domain is only set up with KOMI and that no other configurations are interfering with the verification process.

  5. DNS Records Not Propagated:
DNS changes can take some time to propagate. If your domain isn't verifying, it might be because the DNS records haven’t fully updated yet. Wait for a few hours and try verifying again.
